A new idea!

August 21st, 2005 at 05:00 am

Well, it's probably not new to a lot of people, but it is for us. I was thinking today about the 1 month that I don't get
paid. As much as I love working for a school, this is the one drawback. Anyway - that month is always a bit tight. We
plan for it and all, so it's always fine - and we don't spend much during that time - but, still, I'd like to make it a bit
less of a burden. One of the things that always seems to take up a chunk of money is groceries. After I thought about it,
I thought it would be a great idea to purchase gift cards from our favorite grocery store and save them for that one
month. From September through June I'll put a bit extra into our grocery budget; every few weeks I'll purchase a $50.00
gift card. When July rolls around, we'll be all set grocery budget wise!! I asked Kevin if he thought it was a good idea, and
he was thrilled with it! I think by doing this one little thing, it will make our lives so much easier next summer! I'm really
excited about it!

Our meeting went well this morning. The group decided to buy more Proctor and Gamble (doing well and projections look
even better with the acquisition of Gillette), and more Target (business will pick up even more with back to school and
then the holidays right around the corner). I think those are two smart buys.

I'm so grateful that we didn't have to pay for all of the plumbing that went on here today. The plumber showed up
at 9:00 a.m. as promised. He did replace the hot water heater - but it took quite a while. Then, for some reason the
kitchen faucet wasn't running very well. He checked it out and found that, because the faucet is so old, it had been
leaking under the sink. YUCK! He had to replace the entire faucet in the kitchen, too. They didn't finish with everything
until around 4:00 this afternoon! Holy cow, I'm sure that bill is going to be enormous. Again, Kevin and I are so glad
it's not something WE have to cover. One of the joys of renting! =)

We walked up to Quiznos at lunch and split a sandwich. We also had a $1.00 off coupon, so it wasn't too bad at all. We
had last night's leftovers for dinner tonight. Kevin has two games tomorrow (and will make another $100.00!) and I'll
be at home finishing laundry and working on categorizing/notating more pictures. I did finish completely (FINALLY!) our
wedding photo album, and our honeymoon photo album. I also began an anniversary journal that notes where we went
and what we did for each wedding anniversary.

Be careful with the gift card plan. Read the fine print carefully on the cards. Make absolutely sure that the value put on the cards doesn't drop w/inactivity (some drop 1-2%/month) or doesn't have a wicked short time limit (like 6 months).

Otherwise you might find out that the cards lost their value just when you need 'em!
